Acai bowls, I love you, but make room for another smoothie bowl on the block. The Chocolate Bowl. The Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate Smoothie Bowl to be exact. This creamy-layered, decadent-looking dish is actually quite the healthy-delicious vegan treat. And I made this bowl with a special favorite protein powder for added plant-based protein and nutrients..
Out of this swirled.
Where's my spoon?
The Chocolate bowl. OK, so lets be clear here. There is nothing terribly mind-blowing about this recipe. I know that. It is really just a super thick, creamy and frosty smoothie poured into a bowl and topped with a swirl of sweetened peanut or almond butter. But even still, this recipe is one to try. I make it allllllll the time so I figured I would share it with you guys. And if you get bored easily like I do, just whip out your thinking cap because there are endless topping options once your creativity takes flight.
Spices and superfoods
And on and on. Just imagine the vegan topping bar at your fave frozen yogurt shop. Sprinkle your cravings on top for color, texture and even added nutrition.
The healthy part? Well this ice cream imposter is dairy free and made using non-dairy milk, a pile of frozen bananas and a few other frosty ingredients. But I easily make this a nutrition-infused treat by using one of my favorite vegan smoothie protein powders: Shakeology.
I fell in love with Shakeology a little over a year ago and have had them stocked in my pantry ever since. They are my go-to shake ingredient when my husband or I crave a chocolate shake, but one with some substance. You can read more about Shakeology on this post I did about it. Or check out how it stacks up against a long list of other vegan protein powders in my big protein powder review post. I love Shakeology because it is pretty sweet in flavor, so it really makes a great dessert-style smoothie or smoothie bowl. Shakeology is almost too sweet for me when I want something low-in-sweetness and healthier-tasting. But for a sweet tooth, it delivers!
Whip this up in the afternoon for a treat-style energy boost or indulge and have it for breakfast or even serve it as an after-dinner dessert treat. It has plenty of sweetness so you will easily mistake this bowl for a bowl of ice cream. But one glance at the ingredients and you will remember how healthy this bowl actually is!
To lighten things up simply use a bit less of the calorie dense nut butter.
Grab this bowl, curl up on your favorite chair and start swooning. Hopefully this treat will make you feel like this...
Chocolate bowl here you come..
Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate Bowl
vegan, serves 1-2
chocolate flavor: 1 packet vegan chocolate Shakeology (or a sub*)
liquid: 3/4 cup non-dairy milk
banana: 1 1/2 - 2 frozen bananas
something frosty: 1/4 cup frozen watermelon or ice cubes (try coffee or coconut milk ice cubes for a yummy flavor spin!)
topping: 2 Tbsp peanut butter + 1 tsp maple or agave syrup
garnish: banana slices
*substitute with another sweetened chocolate protein powder like VegaOne or another fave of mine Philosophie's Cacao Magic
1. Combine the nut butter and sweetener in a small bowl, microwave for 20 seconds and stir until smooth.
2. Add the liquid and chocolate flavor to a blender and blend on low until smooth. Turn off blender and add the banana and frosty ingredients. Place lid on blender and blend from low to high until smooth.
3. Spoon the mixture into a small serving dish (or two!). Tip: chill the serving dish(es) before using to help keep your bowl cool while you eat it. Another tip is to place one large ice cube or chunk of frozen banana in the bottom of the bowl to help cool the mixture down.
4. Swirl the nut butter over top, add garnish slices and serve!

*PS. Yup I'm a Shakeology "coach" because I love the coach discount and happily spread the word about this yummy vegan product.
